Edge Initiative

Three Free Tech Webinars for October

It's October, the perfect time to cozy up to the computer for a TechSoup webinar and a nice warm cup of cider. Hope you can join us online to talk technology!

Taking tech training out of the library: Mobile labs and more

One of my favorite things that I'm working on right now is a webinar series for TechSoup for Libraries based on the Edge Initiative Benchmarks. It's an opportunity to find out about and highlight some great examples of technology services in libraries.

Librarians with class: What do you teach?

Many libraries are working hard to increase the level of digital literacy in their communities. Whether it's structured and scheduled classes or one-to-one assistance, library instruction helps people take advantage of all the opportunities that technology can provide.

Libraries fostering content creation: Webinar follow-up

Thanks to everyone who attended today's webinar, "From Content Consumers to Content Creators." I would like to give a special thanks to Donna Feddern, who shared her experiences working on LibraryYOU at the Escondido Public Library.

The Assets in Your Community

I attended the R-Squared Conference earlier this month and participated in a track on asset-based community development, led by John McKnight and John Creighton.

Free Webinar: From Content Consumers to Content Creators

Thinking about how to empower your community members to create digital content? Register to join our free webinar on Tuesday, September 25th at 11 a.m. Pacific time, to find out more.

Edge Benchmark Three: Survey Said!

We recently conducted a survey to get responses on The Edge Benchmark Three, which is focused on providing technology to meet community members' job-seeking and entrepreneurial needs. The variety of responses to this survey varied widely. One person responded, "Are we supposed to be doing all that?" While others saw this Benchmark as a necessary and essential challenge and some attested that their library is already providing all the services and technology mentioned.

Edge Benchmark Two Stirs Up a Conversation

Well, if I'm ever in a library crowd and need a conversation starter, maybe I'll turn to the Edge Benchmark Two. Our survey respondents shared their thoughts and a lot of persectives on the issue of providing access to digital content as well as enabling community members to create their own digital content.  Some people shared that these services just weren't possible to offer in their libraries, while others definitely expressed the desire to offer these services, if they weren't already. What do you think? Should the bar be lowered? Or is it just right?

Small Libraries on the Edge

If you’ve been following this blog, you have an idea of the scope of the Edge Initiative.  It’s a big project, with a lot of to-do items:

Interesting Uses of Technology: Digital Video

Digital video can help you connect with your community, share knowledge, engage and energize your staff and patrons, and demonstrate value on a personal level. Seeing is believing!
