Clash of the Libraries

The Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County (PLCMC) in North Carolina has so many innovative programs and initiatives that I could probably write a book about it. I'll spare you that, however, and just discuss the coolest thing that I learned about from my talk with Kelly Czarnecki at PLCMC. Kelly is a Technology Education Librarian at ImagineOn (a branch completely dedicated to teens and youth). As she explained her job to me, “I provide programming for youth and teens, primarily teens....I just do a variety of programs throughout the year mostly concentrated on gaming and virtual worlds.”

What I think is fantastic is that PLCMC is doing online gaming with other libraries! This summer they had Super Smash Brothers competitions with Detroit Public Library, Ann Arbor District Library and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Gaming events with other libraries are great ways to get publicity and get the gamers in your library engaged with the gamers in other libraries.

PLCMC's Gaming Zone blog has some more information about the competitions.
